My Reflection on PR 415
Taking PR 415 has been one of the most valuable and transformative experiences in my academic journey. This course provided a real-world glimpse into the fast-paced, strategic, and creative nature of public relations work. Throughout the semester, I honed key skills that I know will serve me well as I step into my future career.
One of the most important lessons I learned is the power of constant communication. PR requires you to understand your audiences, anticipate challenges, and build something that resonates with that audience. Through this very hands-on project, I gained experience in developing campaign plans from start to finish, including research, messaging, media relations, evaluation, and (what felt like endless) outreach. I also learned how crucial it is to remain adaptable and solution-oriented when unexpected obstacles arise.
Teamwork was another essential part of this class. Collaborating with classmates in group projects mirrored real agency dynamics where diverse perspectives and strengths come together to build stronger campaigns and events. I improved my ability to listen actively, communicate clearly, and take constructive feedback... all while balancing different working styles and deadlines. This experience reinforced for me that successful PR work is a collaborative effort, built on trust and open communication.
Additionally, PR 415 deepened my event planning and execution skills. From coordinating logistics to having to make changes very often, I saw firsthand how attention to detail and thoughtful organization can make or break an event’s success. These practical skills are critical for the wide range of PR roles I hope to pursue.
Overall, this course prepared me for my future career by bridging theory with practical application. It boosted my confidence in managing projects independently and working effectively within a team. It also showed me the importance of maintaining professionalism and integrity in every aspect of PR work.
As I move forward, I am excited to apply what I’ve learned in real-world settings, continuing to grow as a communicator who can create meaningful, long-lasting connections and impact people. PR 415 felt like a glimpse into the career I'm excited to build as a new Cal Poly Grad!
Special thanks to my team, the entire PR 415 class of hardworking individuals, and Dr. Liu for always championing our growth.
